March General Meeting

March General Meeting
3-14-2013 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm
520 Elliot Street Charlotte NC, 28202
-This months speaker will bring her knowledge of being a start up company in the software arena of “apps”.! With a great professional background to assist in the process of bringing food to the hungry, Bitsy will share her experience.

Bitsy Spencer

-Bitsy Spencer-LaFayette finds that the world is run by 3 things: People, Money, and Technology. Having grown up in a farming community where only women were left in the family, she learned that if something needed doing it was possible to just figure it out and do it-so she never learned that some things aren’t possible. Having started off an art major, she finished with a B.S. in Psychology, then an M.B.A, and later even a yoga teacher certification. Her path has led her to such varied areas as being a Controller and Investment Banker in a small financial firm, to negotiating multi-million dollar purchases of IT hardware, to then switching sides of the table to sell IT services for Microsoft to Fortune 500 customers. Her latest challenge is the initial stages of a non-profit startup here in Charlotte, which is developing a technology to funnel spare change to charities.

January General Meeting

January General Meeting

1-10-2013 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

520 Elliot Street Charlotte NC, 28202

The INotC January 10, 2013 meeting will have Mike Weaver as guest presenter. Mike shared with us a 30 year product development overview and some key thoughts in his presentation “How to Find Good Ideas and Turn Them into Cash” back in March 2010.

  • This month Mike will be presenting “Lessons Learned from Creating Winning and Losing Products”.
  • With each new product development effort there are keys to success which when missing can be identified as causes of failure. Likewise, commercially successful products seem to share common keys.
  • Following a case study approach, Mike will be presenting a series of 5-8 minute looks at products that were winners and losers. The goal is to share insights on keys to each product’s vision, creation, development and ultimate market success/failure. An open question/answer session will follow the presentation.
  • Mike Weaver is a serial inventor, entrepreneur with over 3 decades of experience creating new products and services. Mike has been a member of INotC for five years and currently serves as Vice President.

November – Venture Challenge

November General Meeting
Venture Challenge Competition!

November 8th, 2012 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm
520 Elliot Street Charlotte NC, 28202

Let’s make this one to remember and prosper from!

We here at the INotC and Enventys have made a deal with the Charlotte Research Institute and Venture Challenge, so that you can pitch your invention to judges and investors and get your invention career started or just get some extra capital for the already seasoned inventors product.

Details

What: INOTC Member Pitch Competition
Where: Enventys
When: November 8th, 2012 (6:30pm to 8:30pm)
Who: INoTC Members

All INoTC members are invited to pitch their inventions to a panel of Charlotte Venture Challenge experts. We encourage everyone to take this opportunity to gain experience giving a brief Rocket Pitch. This is a public venue so if you have not filed with the patent office yet you probably should not be pitching.

Pitch Presentation Guidelines

Each presenter will have 3 minutes and 3 slides to pitch their invention/technology. The presentations will be made to a panel of judges. The judges may or may not be able to ask questions depending on how much time we have available for everyone. The audience will also be asked to participate by providing feedback to those people pitching.

Slides: 3 Slide Max (Must use PowerPoint and the 3 slides includes the title slide)

  • Slide 1: Technology/Invention (Briefly describe who you are and what the invention is and does)
  • Slide 2: Market (What markets can this be used in and what problems can it solve)
  • Slide 3: Opportunity (Where do you see the biggest opportunity and what do you need to go after it)
  • Questions from panel: Expect to be asked at least 2 questions

Successful Pitches

  • No single right outline – Prototypes, Pictures, Screen Shots, Graphs – Use Wisely
  • Capture Interest – Paint a Picture – Be Persuasive! You want to sell the audience
  • Do not fill slides with text – Each “punchy” bullet point tells more detail
  • Leave the audience wanting to learn more. Give people a reason to come talk to you.
  • Slides are due 11/6/2012 by 11pm. Please email them to Devin Collins at devin.collins@uncc.edu. We ask that you please include your name in the file name.

      November 8th Logistics at Enventys

    • 6:30pm – Sign-In and Overview
    • 6:40pm – Introduction of Judges
    • 6:45pm – Pitches Begin (The number of pitches will determine whether we do questions)
    • TBD – Feedback Sessions

We will announce the teams selected to present at the Charlotte Venture Challenge Pitch Day on December 6th 2012 the following week. All teams will be notified of their status via email.

It is important that you email or call Devin to let him know that you want to do a presentation !!!

    - It can not be over stated the importance of the beginning stages of the commercialization for product developers. Having a product is only the 1st stages in the process. To get feed back from judges that understand the business is worth its weight in gold in more than one.

    - If you are not wanting to present for the competition feel free to just watch, bring guest or bring your product or sketches to share during the networking time.

    - Collectively when we network, mountains can be moved!
    - Through creativity, we can develop a civilization worth living in!
    - When we commercialize, we give our value and vision to the world!

As usual at our meetings, we will be networking amongst the group. Whatever stage that your current project is in, feel free to bring prototypes, finished products, sales sheets or anything else that you would like to get an opinion on from the group. Bring business cards and make connections. (keep in mind that showing somethings could compromise the protection of that project)

At the last meeting we ran out of time before Brian could collect the questionnaire from July’s meeting. If anyone that filled this out could bring it to the September meeting it would be appreciated.

Always remember to invite friends or business associates which would benefit from INotC. Collectively we have a deep wealth of knowledge as a group. Invite other inventors, engineers, entrepreneurs, financiers, professors, manufactures and anyone else that would enjoy the process and business of product development. Knowledge is power!!

    August Meeting – Prototyping

Randy Landreneau will be speaking with us at the 8-9-2012 general meeting. He has some good insight on prototyping and will be sharing that insight with us Via SKYPE.

Examples of methods for rapid prototyping

    • In Stereo lithography, a movable column positions itself in a special photosensitive resin so that a very thin layer of the liquid is on top of the column.  Based on the CAD file of the part, a computer directs a laser to the exact areas of the liquid, which harden.  The column then lowers a minute amount, providing another thin layer of liquid, which again gets hit by the laser.  This goes on until the complete part is fully created.
    • In Fused Deposition Modeling, a computer uses the CAD file to build the part using a very small extrusion of molten plastic, layer by layer.
    • The latest addition is 3D Printing.  This process uses a special type of inkjet printer where a computer is directing the print heads to spray fine amounts of material, layer by layer, until the part is completely built.

BIO - Randy Landreneau is a former President of the Tampa Bay Inventors Council.  Randy runs Complete Product Development, a company that does consulting, design, development, prototyping (old school and rapid), and short runs using urethane casting. Randy also provides inventor education through two DVDs – How to Make Plastic Prototypes and Invention 101. Randy plans to talk about prototyping, including the exciting new developments in 3D printing.
    Complete Product Development website

As usual at our meetings we will be networking amongst the group. What ever stage that your current project is in feel free to bring prototypes, finished products, sales sheets or anything else that you would like to get an opinion on from the group. Bring business cards and make connections. (keep in mind that showing somethings could compromise the protection of that project)

Anyone that has taken some time to participate in the questionnaire handed out at our last meeting and would like to discuss with me and share their opinion, feel free to get involved. Any input that you may have will be helpful and is important to the success on the system being created to help increase the effectiveness of the group.
